A green building covered in terraced gardens and vegetation

What is Sustainable Architecture?

By Bethany Webb

Cities are expanding to meet the demands of the people, and in doing so they are slowly erasing the green spaces the population has access to. You might have noticed it where you live. The trees that used to crown the sidewalks are slowly being cut down to make room for building expansions, the open spaces children used to play in are being paved over for apartment complexes, and suburbs are popping up where forests once used to be.

In the face of rising urbanization, many solutions have been suggested to allow cities to live in harmony with nature as much as possible. One of these is sustainable architecture. You might have heard of it referred to as environmental architecture or green architecture.

Let's dive into what exactly sustainable architecture is and how it helps the environment.

What is Sustainable Architecture

The term sustainability means using the resources we have now in a way that doesn't destroy or deplete them for future generations. Sustainable architecture refers to buildings that have been specifically designed to reduce the many footprints humans have when we expand cities. It blends the buildings into the surrounding landscapes and integrates green spaces into the overall designs.

The goal of sustainable architecture is not to sacrifice well-performing building designs in exchange for being good for the environment, as some might claim. In fact, sustainable architecture is often more cost efficient than its counterpart.

This type of design is characterized by energy conservation and efficiency as well as water conservation and generation. Sustainably made buildings typically generate a portion of their own energy, usually via solar panels, and utilize rainwater collection systems to reduce their need for outside water sources. They also aim to eliminate how much energy they use for heating and cooling.

Sustainable architecture benefits not only the environment, but people as well. The reduction of emissions also improves both indoor and outdoor air quality, which is a major factor in public health. Since sustainable architecture emphasizes integrating green spaces into its design, it creates a far more beautiful area than traditional urban designs.

Now that we've talked about what sustainable architecture is and how it helps people as well as the environment, let's look at some examples from around the world.

Sustainable Architecture Examples

Beitou Public Library in Taipei, Taiwan
Figure 1. Beitou Public Library, Taipei, Taiwan

The photo above shows the Beitou Public Library located in Taipei. This beautiful building was designed by Kuo Ying-Chao, and is one of the first green libraries in Taiwan. It includes a rainwater collection system that flushes the toilets and even waters indoor plants. It also features solar panels that can hold up to 16W of power. One of its most impressive features is its ability to reduce the number of warm sun rays that enter the building.

The colorful Pixel building in Melbourne, Australia

This is the Pixel building, located in Melbourne, Australia and designed by the architecture firm studio505. The Pixel building was the first carbon neutral office building built in Australia. It produces its own power and collects its own water. On the roof, it features a native plant garden, and its facade actually allows less warm sunlight to enter. Not only is this building extremely sustainable, but it's also a unique and colorful creation that makes the surrounding area even more beautiful.

Gardens by the Bay in Singapore
Figure 3. Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Gardens by the Bay in Singapore is a botanical garden designed by Grant Associates that hosts over 1.5 million plant species. It is a popular tourist site, but it's also a beautiful example of sustainable architecture. Gardens by the Bay uses cooling technology that reduces energy use by 30% compared to other buildings using the traditional technology. It generates carbon neutral energy on site, features ecosystems that are used by local fauna, and minimizes the warming by solar heat. This structure is one of the most impressive uses of sustainable architecture.

The Conclusion to Draw

Sustainable architecture benefits everyone. It reduces and sometimes altogether eliminates carbon emissions of a traditional building, improves air quality, and creates more green spaces. Sustainable designs also reduce overall costs and last longer, an incentive for the people making them.

Sustainable architecture isn't just something that big companies can do — you can actually participate in some of these practices too. Using energy efficient lighting, adding renewable energy to your home, and using native plants in your landscaping to reduce water needs are just some of the ways you can help on your own.

In conclusion, sustainable architecture is something that should be encouraged as it helps everyone, but you can also do things to help the environment in the same way that sustainable architecture does.
